Geological potential for storage and production of hydrogen in northern part of the Republic of Croatia - GEPARD

Project goal
The first objective is to assess the potential for commercial discoveries of geogenic hydrogen in northern part of Croatia based on an interdisciplinary approach incorporating remote sensing, geochemical, geophysical, and geological investigations. The second objective is to evaluate the suitability of selected subsurface structures within the study area for hydrogen and other forms of energy storage (compressed gas, combined concepts of gas storage and energy production), including the definition of (un)acceptability criteria.
Hypothesis
The project results are expected to make a significant contribution to the assessment of the potential for implementing underground hydrogen storage technologies by addressing the question of whether underground hydrogen storage is feasible under the geological conditions present in the Croatian part of the Pannonian Basin System. The reservoir and sealing rocks to be investigated will be representative of potential underground hydrogen storage sites, including depleted hydrocarbon fields as well as traps in deep saline aquifers within the Croatian part of the Pannonian Basin System. The outcomes of this project will facilitate the identification of other prospective locations and will also provide a basis for the preparation of feasibility studies for potential pilot projects of underground hydrogen storage in selected subsurface structures.
