The scientific interest of the Department’s staff covers the areas of technical and natural sciences. In the area of technical sciences, our scientists are active in the fields of hydrogeology and engineering geology while in the area of natural sciences,
they are active in the area of fundamental geology and petroleum-geology. Scientific and exploratory activity of the Department takes place within the scope of the national scientific projects, which are financed by Croatian Science Foundation, ESI funds and through exploratory support of the University of Zagreb as well as through international scientific projects. The Department’s scientists participated in the realization of the following scientific projects in the area of technical sciences: „LandSlidePlan – Methodology development for landslide susceptibility assessment for land-use planning based on LiDAR technology“, „PRIMJER – Applied landslide research for risk mitigation and prevention measure development“, „Design of Hydrogeological Geodatabase of Republic of Croatia III“ and „Development of methodologies for landslide mapping and monitoring for the risk management purposes“. The Department’s scientists participated in the realization of the following scientific projects in the area of natural sciences: „GEODEP – GEOlogical characterization of the Eastern part of the Drava depression subsurface intended for the evaluation of Energy Potentials“, „Mathematical research in Geology VII“, „Petrological and geochemical modelling of Neogene sediments in Požega Valley and reconstruction of the tectonic evolution of the Pannonian Basin in Croatia“ and „Cenozoic lithostratigraphic evolution and tectonic activity: Correlation of Continental and Adriatic regions of Croatia“. Regarding international scientific projects, the Department’s scientists participated in the realization of the Horizon 2020 project „HyStorIES – Hydrogen Storage In European Subsurface“ and projects of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) „Influence of climate change on groundwater resources and groundwater/surface water interactions in the Sava River Basin“ and „Using Nitrogen and Oxygen Stable Isotopes in the Determination of Nitrate Origin in the Unsaturated and Saturated Zone of the Velika Gorica Wellfield“. The Department’s scientists were also involved in organization and participation of international and domestic conferences. Thanks to this activity, the Department’s staff published a number of articles in scientific and professional journals. A significant number of studies and elaborates were made in cooperation with companies, public institutions and institutes such as Drava Pulp d.o.o. (Virovitica), Fidon d.o.o. (Zagreb), Geoindex d.o.o. (Zagreb), Hrvatske vode (Zagreb), Poslovni park Virovitica d.o.o. (Virovitica), VG vodoopskrba d.o.o. (Velika Gorica), Vodovod Osijek d.o.o. (Osijek), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and International Atomic Energy Agency (Beč, Austria).
